Leverkusen, March 2014 – Multifunctionality is the key to success in today's international cosmetics market. Bayer MaterialScience has responded to this trend by developing Baycusan® C, a line of film-forming polymers that prove to be true all-arounders in beauty care, because these raw materials are not only eco-friendly and very easy to process, they also open up a range of unimagined possibilities. From skincare to makeup to sun protection, at in-cosmetics 2014 in Hamburg (Messe Hamburg, Stand 1K20, Hall A1), Bayer is presenting sophisticated formulations for cosmetic products with added value.
In search of a fast, but effective facial moisturizer, more and more consumers are turning to BB creams, also known as blemish or beauty balms. These versatile formulations are a combination of moisturizer, sunscreen and high-coverage foundation in a single product. BB creams therefore are expected to conquer the European market and replace conventional, single-purpose products, as they already have in Asia.
The future of BB cream is CC cream
Bayer MaterialScience has developed innovative guide formulations that decisively enhance the BB cream success concept: They are easier to apply, protect the skin with sunscreen or an anti-aging effect, cover blemishes and give the skin a smooth, youthful look.
The silky-soft feeling is achieved primarily through the excellent sensory properties of Baycusan® C 1005. The addition of Baycusan® C 1000 improves the rub-off behavior of BB creams and even significantly increases the sun protection factor (SPF) in products already containing UV protection, an effect referred to as “SPF boosting.” “With these properties, the products already fulfill the demands on CC creams. Color control creams are likely to play a bigger role on the European market in the future,” says Dr. Paula Rodrigues, global head of cosmetic raw materials business at Bayer MaterialScience.
Great skin feel despite high sun protection factor
The raw material Baycusan® C 1000 proves to be the material of choice in sun protection as well. The demand for high sun protection factors is on the rise, but consumers do not like the sticky feel often associated with high concentrations of UV filters. The product solves this dilemma in very elegant fashion with its outstanding sensory characteristics. It forms a flexible film that adapts to the movement of the skin. Furthermore, this multifunctional polymer stabilizes modern oil-in-water sun protection products, making them highly water resistant.
But it can do even more. Simply adding this raw material significantly increases the sun protection factor. Thanks to this SPF boosting effect – verified by an independent institute – manufacturers can reduce selected UV filters and cut costs. That makes Baycusan® ideal for cost-optimized formulations that additionally meet the criteria for the quality seal of the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB).
Almost too good to be true: Mascaras with Baycusan®
The raw materials also are setting new standards in the makeup segment. One current example is a mascara formulation that volumizes and lengthens lashes. “In this eye makeup, the Baycusan® C 1000 dispersion promotes good water and smudge resistance, and makes the mascara last,” explains Dr. Sophie Viala, head of global development for cosmetic raw materials at Bayer. Other natural ingredients condition lashes, giving them a fresh new look. “Even after a long day at the office followed by a workout at the gym and an event in the evening, your eyes still look brilliant,” Viala says.
Simple application and fast drying are the properties of a second mascara formulation. It is long-lasting and flake-resistant, but still can be removed easily with warm water. These properties are attributable to Baycusan® C 1004, a polyurethane dispersion developed by Bayer MaterialScience specially for makeup. This cosmetic raw material helps to achieve perfectly curled lashes that stay separated. Another advantage: Through the use of nylon particles, this mascara lengthens lashes considerably. At the same time, the product ensures absolutely perfect hold, meaning that nothing sticks, flakes or gets into the eyes.
